Since last season, the sprint relay teams of Godwin Heights have made a habit of defying expectations. They managed to do so yet again today at the Division 2 State Finals held at Zeeland Stadium.
The “X-Men” consisting of Christopher Libbett, Kelvyn Valdez, Maurice Vinson, and Tamar WIlliams were seeded second behind Lansing Sexton in the 4×200/800M relay by almost half a second and were expected to edge out their competition in the 4×100/400M relay by a fraction of a second as well. Instead, the boys blew away all other 15 teams in the 800 relay running a new school and OK Silver record time of 1:29.38. That would not be their only gold of the day.
Minutes later, the X-Men stepped back onto the track for the 400M Relay only to obliterate their season record of 43.13 and dash their way to a new school and OK Silver record of 42.86 as well as secure the victory.
The X-Men’s 800 relay time qualifies them for the Championship division of the upcoming New Balance Nationals with a chance of earning All-American status. Their 4×100 time qualifies them for the Emerging Elite division of that same meet.
